Opinion: Kasich’s rocking the boat on Ohio school funding – and it’s about time

By Thomas Suddes

In politics, as in life, it's safer to go along and get along than to rock the boat. Republican Gov. John Kasich, to his credit, is a boat-rocker. But rocking boats isn't how small-town Republicans land in the legislature, which helps explain the cool response some of them are giving Kasich's school-funding plan: He's challenging the status quo -- for the better.

School funding is so tangled it calls to mind a British statesman's quip about a spat between Denmark and Prussia in the 1800s: "[It] is so complicated, only three men ... have ever understood it. One was Prince Albert, who is dead. The second was a German professor who became mad. I am the third, and I have forgotten all about it."

Just as bad, term limits make context and perspective MIA in the legislature, stoking what bystanders call "the tyranny of the printout."
