A positive month for Ohio's private sector job seekers

The Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions announced on July 16 the release of May's Ohio by the Numbers report (now available on The Buckeye Institute's website).

Private sector employment rose by 13,300 jobs as governments shrank by 1,300 positions. Ohio also improved markedly in job growth relative to other states, moving from 24th to 22nd-highest private sector employment growth rate since 2010.

The labor force rose by nearly 3,200 workers. Although 27,000 people have entered the labor force since the beginning of 2015, the state's supply of workers is still approximately 112,000 short of its 2010 level. Both the unemployment rate and the labor force participation rate stayed constant from last month.

The number of private sector jobs has grown 8.4% in worker freedom states since 2012, compared to 6.8% in forced unionization states like Ohio.

Highlights from the report include:

  • Ohio gained 13,300 private sector jobs and lost 1,300 total government jobs in May;

  • Ohio's unemployment rate remains at 5.2%;

  • Ohio rose to 22nd nationally in private sector job growth since January 2010, increasing 10.2% (8th-ranked Michigan increased 15.2%);

  • Ohio currently ranks 47th nationally for private sector job growth since January of 1990, increasing only 12.7% (top-ranked Nevada grew 105.7% during the same time span).
