Join the Red Cross to Sound the Alarm and Save Lives from Home Fires
(FINDLAY, OH, NOVEMBER 10, 2018) — The American Red Cross North Central Ohio Chapter asks
everyone to help Sound the Alarm in Upper Sandusky and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to
help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.
The Red Cross North Central Ohio Chapter and the Upper Sandusky Fire Department are holding a
Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event on Saturday, November 17, from
9:00am-3:00pm. Red Cross volunteers and local partners will be canvassing neighborhoods, installing
free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms, and helping families create escape plans.
Volunteers will meet at the Upper Sandusky Fire Department at 8:30am before canvassing
neighborhoods in the southern area of town. Executive Director Todd James says several hundred
homes will be visited during the canvassing, and many volunteers are needed to help. James says
volunteers do not need any experience. “We’ll provide training the morning of the event for the volunteers
who will serve as installers, safety educators and documenters.” James says businesses, organizations,
and individuals who want to volunteer can show up the morning of the event, call the Red Cross at (419)
422-9322 or email northcentralohio@redcross.org.
“Home fires are the biggest disaster threat our community faces, killing seven people in this country every day” said James. “Please help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your
community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires.”
The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working
smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the
odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the
organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
Please join this important effort. Together, we can Sound the Alarm about fire safety and help save lives.
Supporters of the North Central Ohio Chapter Sound The Alarm program include Marathon Petroleum
Corporation and Ohio Logistics.
