Ohio Infrastructure Needs Aplenty Governor Mike DeWine appointed an Advisory Committee on Transportation Infrastructure last week to develop options to fund critical infrastructure needs in Ohio. Ohio is on the verge of a major funding shortfall for our roadways, bridges and public transportation networks, as infrastructure funding has declined significantly in recent years. The Ohio Department of Transportation is projecting a budget of $1.7 billion next year—far below the $2.4 billion Ohio invested in 2014. Compounding the problem is the reality that even funding at the 2014 level would leave the task of expanding the capacity and modernizing of Ohio’s infrastructure unaddressed. A modest, phased-in increase of the gas tax is the most likely remedy, but initial pushback on that idea from conservative state legislators may lead the Advisory Committee to explore other options. The Advisory Committee is set to report its recommendations back to the Governor by mid-February, which means there’s not a lot of time to examine and evaluate additional funding options. Expect Governor DeWine to leverage their findings to introduce a multifaceted solution he knows can get legislative backing.
